On March 21, U.S. Ambassador Michael Battle, alongside Mafia District’s Administrative Secretary, Hon. Olivanus Paul Thomas, commemorated the successful completion of the third phase of the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) project to restore these historic Swahili ruins within the Mafia Island archipelago.

The Colectivo Tributo aos Ancestrais PT (Collective Tribute to the Ancestors) in Portugal is hosting a a series of ceremonies in Lisbon between June 23rd and August 8th , in homage of the African Ancestors who fell victim to the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The theme of their 5th Ancestral Tribute is the date that Portugal initiated the transatlantic trade in Africans in 1444. 

AMSTERDAM — A group of 35 grassroots organisations and 150 individuals in the Netherlands have sent an urgent letter to Second Chamber, the Municipality of Amsterdam and NiNsee, urging them to have someone else than Speaker of the Second Chamber Martin Bosma attend the Keti Koti/Emancipation Day commemoration in Amsterdam on July 1.

When walking around St. Eustatius, colonial statues and plagues dominate the island’s cultural landmarks. St. Eustatius’ Afrikan cultural heritage is under threat and marginalized. This is despite the fact that St. Eustatius was once the largest Middle Passage transit port in the Western hemisphere, and the majority of its 3,500 inhabitants are of Afrikan descent.
