On the evening of Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, the St. Eustatius community was saddened to discover that a memorial wreath and light intended to honor their cultural heritage was the target of vandalism.

On November 12 and 13 the St. Eustatius Public Library hostedthe exhibition of a young Haitian painter, sculpture, and digital artist residing in the Netherlands, Frederick Calmes. The exhibition consists of twelve artworks created for the family heritage project “Remember Statia: Tracing Our Origins” organized by the Bigi Bon foundation and the St. Eustatius Afrikan Burial Ground Alliance from April to October 2024.

On January 26, Kenneth Cuvalay and Derrick Simmons of the St. Eustatius Afrikan Burial Ground Alliance (in short: Alliance), together with the Heritage Inspector, Raimie Richardson, led a delegation of the UNESCO Netherlands Commission around the historical Afrikan burial grounds Golden Rock, Godet, and Congo. Students from the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS) are set to spend a week on a former plantation in Boven Suriname in the last week of January 2025, where they will conduct archaeological research into the living conditions of enslaved Africans. This unique trajectory, which is partly made possible with funds from the Netherlands, is part of a project by the Broos Institute for Afrocentric Studies and Research, in collaboration with its sister foundation US4US in Suriname and the AdeKUS.

AMSTERDAM — On Sunday October 13, Afrocentric media platform in the Netherlands, AFRO Magazine will launch a special print edition with articles by people from the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius, relating to the island’s slavery past. The event that will take place at the AFRO Magazine offices in the city of Weesp in North Holland, will also feature the unveiling of artwork created by artist Fre Calmes from the stories that are published in the magazine.
