{"id":143403,"date":"2026-05-26T07:15:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T07:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afromagazine.eu\/unesco-recognized-afrikan-burial-ground-in-statia-vandalized\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T07:15:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T07:15:20","slug":"unesco-recognized-afrikan-burial-ground-in-statia-vandalized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afromagazine.eu\/en\/unesco-recognized-afrikan-burial-ground-in-statia-vandalized\/","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO recognized Afrikan Burial Ground in Statia vandalized"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>On the evening of Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, the St. Eustatius community was saddened to discover that a memorial wreath and light intended to honor their cultural heritage was the target of vandalism.<\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The flower arrangement and light that illuminates at night, was moved and carelessly tossed aside.\u00a0 The site along Smoke Alley curving toward Bay Road was strategically chosen for the memorial wreath placement and global recognition by the UNESCO delegation, Statia&#8217;s Heritage Inspector, members of the St. Eustatius Afrikan Burial Ground Alliance and others.<\/p>\n<article class=\"align-center\"><div class=\"field field-media--field-media-image field-formatter-image field-name-field-media-image field-type-image field-label-visually_hidden has-single\"><h3 class=\"field__label visually-hidden\">Image<\/h3><figure class=\"field-type-image__figure image-count-1\"><div class=\"field-type-image__item\">\n        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/mediamedium\/public\/2025-01\/475087461_624222876775599_782424004866074535_n.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"773\" alt=\"Alliance UNESCO1\" class=\"image-style-mediamedium\" \/><\/div>\n    <\/figure><\/div>\n\n  <\/article><p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Godet burial ground is one of Statia&#8217;s most significant sites honoring our Afrikan Ancestors.
