{"id":143450,"date":"2026-05-26T07:15:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T07:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afromagazine.eu\/un-chief-demands-global-action-to-end-racism-against-people-of-african-descent\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T07:15:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T07:15:18","slug":"un-chief-demands-global-action-to-end-racism-against-people-of-african-descent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afromagazine.eu\/en\/un-chief-demands-global-action-to-end-racism-against-people-of-african-descent\/","title":{"rendered":"UN chief demands global action to end racism against people of African descent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEW YORK, United States of America &#8212;\u00a0The UN Secretary-General has called for global action to \u201cvanquish racism and discrimination\u201d towards people of African descent, in his message marking the international day highlighting the diaspora<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In December 2013, the UN General Assembly declared the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/racism\/international-decade-african-descent#:~:text=In%20December%202013%2C%20the%20UN,recognition%2C%20justice%20and%20development%E2%80%9D.\">International Decade for People of African Descent<\/a>\u00a0to address issues of recognition, justice, and development.<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-drupal-media align-right\"><article><div class=\"field field-media--field-media-image field-formatter-image field-name-field-media-image field-type-image field-label-hidden has-single\"><figure class=\"field-type-image__figure image-count-1\"><div class=\"field-type-image__item\">\n        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/mediaklein\/public\/2024-08\/United%20Nations%20Secretary-General%2C%20Ant%C3%B3nio%20Guterres.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" alt=\"United Nations Secretary-General, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres UN Photo\/Mark Garten\" class=\"image-style-mediaklein\" \/><\/div>\n    <\/figure><\/div>\n\n  <\/article><figcaption>UN Secretary-General, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<br \/>\nUN Photo\/Mark Garten<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The decade beginning in 2015 aimed to promote the rights of people of African descent, increase awareness of their cultural contributions, and strengthen legal frameworks to combat racial discrimination.\u00a0In 2021, 31 August was recognised as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/african-descent-day\">international day<\/a>.\u00a0UN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\">Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a>\u00a0called on Member States to declare a second international decade \u201cto help to accelerate global efforts for true change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addressing racism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guterres noted how people of African descent have contributed to society through leadership and activism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYet,\u201d he said, \u201cthe intolerable legacies of enslavement and colonialism endure. Systemic racism is rife and continues to mutate into new forms\u00a0\u2013 including in new technologies, where algorithms can amplify discrimination.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Secretary-General said the UN is prioritising eradicating the \u201cscourge of racism and racial discrimination\u201d and has established a new Anti-Racism Office that will address racism in the workplace<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also need governments to take the lead \u2013 by advancing and implementing policies and laws to tackle systemic racism and ensure inclusion,\u201d Guterres said.\u00a0He also said there is a need for reparatory justice to address slave crimes.\u00a0The UN chief calls for global efforts to build a world of equality, opportunity and justice for all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Systemic and structural<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Human Rights Council<\/a>-appointed experts<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/statements\/2024\/08\/time-decisive-action-against-racism-and-racial-discrimination-un-experts\">\u00a0also called for an end to racism\u00a0<\/a>ahead of the International Day while recognising \u201cthat millions of people of African descent around the world continue to be victims of systemic and structural racism and racial discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like the Secretary-General, the experts call for a second International Decade for People of African Descent from 2025-2034 as \u201cwe are far from ensuring respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms of people of African descent, including eradication of all forms of discrimination against them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next decade would need a stronger focus on recognition, justice and development while tackling challenges that directly affect people of African descent.<\/p>\n<p>The experts said Member States should create and enforce human rights tools, strategies, and monitoring systems to address systemic racism and ensure the full protection and respect of the rights of people of African descent in the coming decade.<\/p>\n<p>With the upcoming UN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/summit-of-the-future\">Summit of the Future<\/a>\u00a0in September and the 16th Conference of the Parties for biodiversity in October, experts are urging member states to use these important meetings as opportunities to address issues concerning people of African descent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe time for decisive action is now.
