UNESCO recognized Afrikan Burial Ground in Statia vandalized
On the evening of Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, the St. Eustatius community was saddened to discover that a memorial wreath and light intended to honor their cultural heritage was the target of vandalism.
The flower arrangement and light that illuminates at night, was moved and carelessly tossed aside. The site along Smoke Alley curving toward Bay Road was strategically chosen for the memorial wreath placement and global recognition by the UNESCO delegation, Statia's Heritage Inspector, members of the St. Eustatius Afrikan Burial Ground Alliance and others.

The Godet burial ground is one of Statia's most significant sites honoring our Afrikan Ancestors. It has received the distinguished recognition by the UNESCO "Routes of Enslaved Peoples." The site will forever acknowledge the historical injustices of the transatlantic trafficking of our enslaved ancestors and promoting universal values of tolerance, respect, and dignity.
