The Broos Institute for Afrocentric Studies and Research and the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies are launching two certified programmes in the Netherlands this autumn: the Certificate and the Postgraduate Certificate in Decolonisation and Afrocentric Knowledge. The course starts on 28 September 2026 and runs through to February 2027. Classes take place at ROCvA MBO College Zuidoost, Fraijlemaborg 135 in Amsterdam.
Imagine sitting in a classroom in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Across from you stands a professor from Ghana. Not to tell you how the world looks from a Western vantage point — but to think alongside you from an entirely different starting place. From African knowledge systems. From the diaspora. From your own history.
That is what the Broos Institute for Afrocentric Studies and Research and the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies are making possible this autumn. For the first time in the Netherlands, two fully accredited programmes are being offered in the field of decolonisation and Afrocentric knowledge — accessible to everyone in our community.
What does it involve?
The programme is built around four block weeks, spread across the months of September through January. Each block is led by an international guest lecturer who travels specially from Ghana to the Netherlands to teach.
From 28 September 2026, Prof. Mamudu Abunga Akudugu, Dr. Francis Niagia Santuah, Prof. David Millar and Dr. Katherine Kaunza-Nu-Dem Millar will come to Amsterdam to each deliver one block week. Every one of them is a specialist in their own field — from the foundations of Afrocentric thought to gender and generation, from diaspora and power to education and institutional transformation. The international lecturers will teach alongside local and European co-presenters, whose names will be announced shortly.
One of the teachers involved in the programme is Larry Olomofe, an Afro-British anti-racism professional and philosopher who spoke at length to AFRO Magazine earlier this year. On his collaboration with the Broos Institute, he said: “What I appreciate is that the Broos Institute and the Millar Institute are Black institutions, with a Black focus. That is what is needed for awareness.” And on his personal motivation: “I want to give something back to my community. I am an idealist, yes. But that is necessary. Because without idealism, nothing changes.”
Classes take place at ROCvA MBO College Zuidoost in Amsterdam, four afternoons per week spread over four months. After each block week, two additional days of tutoring and deepening are available — personal contact with the lecturers.
There are two levels of entry: the Certificate is open to everyone, with no formal qualification required. The Postgraduate Certificate is designed for participants who hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Both programmes are accredited by the Millar Institute and conclude with a joint certification ceremony in February 2027.
The participation fee is € 250 for the Certificate and € 350 for the Postgraduate Certificate.
